Selenium
Selenium is a trace mineral the body builds into about 25 proteins, including the enzymes that activate thyroid hormone. Adults need 55 µg a day, mostly from fish, meat, eggs and grains.

Per 100 g vs. a Usual Portion
Why the food that ranks first per 100 g can give less in a real serving.
| Food | Usual portion | Per 100 g | Per portion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chia seeds | 1 tablespoon (12 g) | 55.2µg | 6.6µg |
| Tuna | 1 can (107 g) | 67.8µg | 73µg |
| Pork chop | 1 thin (90 g) | 47.1µg | 42µg |
| Pasta | 1 cup (140 g) | 26.2µg | 37µg |
| Egg | 1 egg (50 g) | 7µg | 3.5µg |
Chia seeds look rich per 100 g, but a tablespoon is small, while one can of tuna gives more than the whole day's 55 µg.
What Is Selenium?
Selenium is unusual among minerals: the body does not just bind it to proteins, it builds it into them. It becomes part of selenocysteine, an amino acid that cells assemble into about 25 selenoproteins. Without enough selenium, those proteins are made more slowly or not at all.
What Selenium Does in the Body
Three groups of selenoproteins do most of the known work. Glutathione peroxidases break down hydrogen peroxide and other by-products before they damage cell membranes and DNA. Thioredoxin reductases keep other proteins in their working state. Iodothyronine deiodinases remove one iodine atom from thyroxine (T4) to make triiodothyronine (T3), the active thyroid hormone.
That last job ties selenium to iodine. The thyroid holds more selenium per gram than any other organ, and it needs both minerals: iodine to build the hormone, selenium to switch it on. Selenium also works next to vitamin E, since both protect the fats in cell membranes from oxidation.
Why Selenium in Food Depends on the Soil
Plants take up selenium from the ground without needing it themselves, so the same crop can hold many times more in one region than another. Animals that graze those crops pass the difference on. This is why figures for grains, nuts and even meat are averages, and why food tables for selenium are less precise than for most minerals.
The clearest proof came from China. In low-selenium areas, children developed Keshan disease, a weakness of the heart muscle, and a joint disorder called Kashin-Beck disease was common. Keshan disease became much rarer once people in those areas were given selenium. In the US, food travels from many regions, which evens out local soil.
A Day of Food With Selenium, Without Brazil Nuts
Most people with a mixed diet get enough selenium. This is one day built only from library foods in usual portions, with no fish and no supplement.
| Meal | Food | Amount | Selenium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Oats | 40g | 12µg |
| Breakfast | Egg | 50g | 3.5µg |
| Lunch | Bread | 24g | 5.6µg |
| Lunch | Chicken breast | 135g | 40µg |
| Snack | Greek yogurt | 150g | 15µg |
| Dinner | Pasta | 140g | 37µg |
| Dinner | Broccoli | 76g | 1.2µg |
| Total | 114µg |
Chicken breast alone gives 40 µg of the total.
Brazil Nuts and Too Much Selenium
Brazil nuts are in a class of their own. The NIH table lists about 544 µg in 1 ounce, 6 to 8 nuts, which is ten times the daily need and above the US upper limit of 400 µg. Single nuts vary widely with where the tree grew, so eating a handful every day is the easiest way to get too much from food.
Who Is Most Likely to Be Low in Selenium
Shortfalls are rare in the US. The groups at higher risk are people on kidney dialysis, who lose selenium in the process, people living with HIV, and people whose food comes mostly from low-selenium soils. Vegans rely on grains and nuts, whose content depends on where they grew.
Common Selenium Mistakes
More antioxidant is not better. Once the selenoproteins are full, extra selenium adds no enzyme activity. In the SELECT trial, 200 µg a day for years did not prevent prostate cancer.
Counting only the supplement. The upper limit covers food and supplements together. A 200 µg capsule on top of an ordinary day and a few Brazil nuts can pass 400 µg.
How Much Selenium You Need
The same for men and women at every age, and the signs of too little or too much.
| Age | Per day |
|---|---|
| 1 - 3 years | 20µg |
| 4 - 8 years | 30µg |
| 9 - 13 years | 40µg |
| 14+ years | 55µg |
| Pregnancy | 60µg |
| Breastfeeding | 70µg |
Selenium in Supplements
Selenium is sold alone and in multivitamins. Labels give elemental selenium in µg, so the number on the label is the number that counts.
Common Selenium Supplement Forms
- Selenomethionine and selenium yeastselenomethionine is the main form in food and in selenium yeast; more than 90% of it is absorbed
- Sodium selenite and selenateinorganic salts; about 50% of selenite is absorbed
A Mislabeled Selenium Supplement
In 2008, 201 people in the US had serious reactions to a liquid supplement that held about 200 times the selenium on its label. The most common problems were diarrhea, tiredness, hair loss, joint pain, brittle or discolored nails and nausea. Selenium has a narrow margin between enough and too much.
The cancer drug cisplatin can lower selenium levels. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before combining a supplement with a medicine.
Tracking Selenium in Caltide
- Logged automaticallyCaltide adds up the selenium in the foods you log and the supplements you tick off, and shows it against the amount for your age and sex in the Nutrition tab.
- Watch the top endWith selenium, a day far over 100% is worth a look. Check whether a supplement and Brazil nuts landed on the same day.

Questions About Selenium
Adults need 55 µg a day, the US RDA and the EU reference value. Pregnancy raises it to 60 µg and breastfeeding to 70 µg.
In the Caltide food library, brazil nuts: 280 µg per 100 g, then Mixed nuts (without peanuts) (143 µg) and Flax seeds (ground) (136 µg).
A 1 ounce handful of 6 to 8 Brazil nuts has about 544 µg of selenium in the NIH table, above the US upper limit of 400 µg. One or two nuts already cover the day, and the amount varies a lot from nut to nut.
Very little, and it depends on the soil they grew in. In the Caltide food library broccoli has 1.6 µg per 100 g and cabbage 0.3 µg, against 67.8 µg in canned tuna.
A garlic smell on the breath and a metallic taste come first, then brittle or lost hair and nails, skin rash, nausea, diarrhea and tiredness. It almost always comes from supplements.
It is absorbed more completely: more than 90% of selenomethionine against about 50% of selenite. That does not make it safer, since higher absorption also means the upper limit is reached sooner.
The thyroid needs selenium to turn the hormone T4 into its active form, T3. Trials of selenium supplements in thyroid disease have had mixed results, so there is no general advice to take it for the thyroid.
Not in the largest trial. In SELECT, a study of more than 35,000 men, 200 µg a day of selenium did not lower the risk of prostate cancer.
