Phosphorus

Phosphorus is the mineral that, with calcium, builds bone, and it is part of DNA and of ATP, the molecule cells use to carry energy. Adults need 700 mg a day, and most people eat well over that without trying.

700 mga day for adults, US RDA

1,250 mg for ages 9 to 18, the highest need (US RDA)

Upper limit · 4,000 mg a day for adults up to 70, 3,000 mg after (US)

  • Most per 100 g 1,174mg Pumpkin seeds
  • Most per portion 381mg 1 fillet salmon
  • Main sources Dairy, meat and fish then beans, nuts, seeds and grains
  • In the body 85% is in bones and teeth

Per 100 g vs. a Usual Portion

Why the food that ranks first per 100 g can give less in a real serving.

Amount per 100 g and in a usual portion
Food Usual portion Per 100 g Per portion
Chia seeds 1 tablespoon (12 g) 691mg 83mg
Cola 1 can (354 g) 9.4mg 33mg
Salmon 1 fillet (125 g) 305mg 381mg
Chicken breast 1 cup (135 g) 224mg 302mg
Lentils 1 cup (180 g) 179mg 322mg
Milk 1 cup (236 g) 104mg 246mg

Cola is often blamed for phosphorus, but a whole can gives 33 mg, against 83 mg in a single tablespoon of chia seeds and far more in a fillet of fish.

What Is Phosphorus?

Phosphorus is the second most plentiful mineral in the body after calcium. About 85% of it is in bones and teeth, bound to calcium as the mineral that makes them hard. The other 15% is spread through every cell and the fluid around them, almost always as phosphate.

What Phosphorus Does in the Body

Phosphate forms the backbone of DNA and RNA. It is the P in ATP, adenosine triphosphate, the molecule that carries energy to every process in the cell. It makes up the phospholipids in cell membranes, and it helps keep the blood at a steady pH by soaking up excess acid.

Three Kinds of Phosphorus in Food

In meat, fish, eggs and dairy, phosphorus is absorbed well. In beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains, much of it is stored as phytate, which people cannot fully digest because the gut lacks the enzyme phytase, so less of it is absorbed. Yeast in bread dough breaks down some phytate, which makes the phosphorus in leavened bread easier to absorb.

The third kind is added. Phosphate salts are used in processed meats, processed cheese, baked goods and soft drinks to hold moisture, raise dough or adjust acidity. They are absorbed more readily than the phosphorus that occurs naturally in food, and they add to the total without showing up as a separate figure on most labels.

How Much Phosphorus One Day of Food Gives

One ordinary day from foods in the Caltide library, in usual portions, with nothing processed and no supplements.

One ordinary day: 1,343 mg, against 700 mg a day for adults
Meal Food Amount Phosphorus
Breakfast Oats 40g 164mg
Breakfast Milk 236g 246mg
Lunch Lentils 180g 322mg
Lunch Rice 160g 69mg
Snack Greek yogurt 150g 189mg
Dinner Chicken breast 135g 302mg
Dinner Broccoli 76g 51mg
Total 1343mg

Unlike most minerals on these pages, phosphorus is hard to fall short of. Any day with protein foods covers it, which is why the concern for most people is never too little.

Phosphorus and Kidney Disease

Healthy kidneys pass the phosphorus the body does not need into urine. In chronic kidney disease they cannot, and blood phosphorus rises. Over time high phosphate, together with calcium, can deposit in blood vessels and soft tissue, and it is linked to heart disease. People with kidney disease are often asked to limit phosphorus, especially from additives.

Low Phosphorus (Hypophosphatemia)

Low phosphorus, called hypophosphatemia, is rare and almost never caused by an ordinary diet. It is seen in premature babies, in alcohol use disorder, in diabetic ketoacidosis, in people restarting food after starvation (refeeding syndrome), and with long-term use of aluminum antacids, which bind phosphate in the gut.

Common Phosphorus Mistakes

Taking phosphorus for bones. Bones need it, but nearly everyone already eats plenty. Calcium and vitamin D are the nutrients more often short.

Blaming cola alone. A can of cola has less phosphorus than a serving of most protein foods. The bigger hidden source is additives in processed meat, cheese and baked goods.

Looking for phosphorus on the nutrition panel. Additives are easier to spot in the ingredient list: look for words containing phos, such as sodium phosphate or phosphoric acid.

How Much Phosphorus You Need

The same for men and women at every age, and the signs of too little or too much.

Recommended daily amount (US RDA)
Age Men and women
1 - 3 years 460mg
4 - 8 years 500mg
9 - 18 years 1,250mg
19+ years 700mg
Pregnancy and breastfeeding, 14 - 18 1,250mg
Pregnancy and breastfeeding, 19+ 700mg

Phosphorus in Supplements

Some supplements contain phosphorus, though few people need one.

Phosphorus Supplement Forms

Many multivitamins contain some phosphorus, usually as phosphate salts such as dipotassium phosphate or disodium phosphate. It also comes bound to fats as phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylserine. Calcium phosphate tablets carry both minerals at once.

Medicines That Interact With Phosphorus

  • Aluminum antacidsbind phosphate in the gut; months of heavy use can cause a shortage
  • Sodium phosphate laxativescan raise blood phosphate sharply; kidney damage has been reported in people at risk

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before combining a supplement with a medicine.

Tracking Phosphorus in Caltide

  • Logged automaticallyCaltide adds up the phosphorus in every food you log and shows it against the amount for your age and sex in the Nutrition tab.
  • Supplements count tooAdd a multivitamin once with its phosphorus. Each day you tick it off, it counts toward your total.

Questions About Phosphorus

Adults need 700 mg a day (US RDA and EU label reference). Children and teenagers aged 9 to 18 need 1,250 mg, the most of any age, while their bones are growing.

In the Caltide food library, pumpkin seeds: 1,174 mg per 100 g. Mixed seeds (1,160 mg) and Sunflower seeds (1,155 mg) come next. Per portion, fish, meat and dairy give the most.

No. Almost everyone eats more than they need. Low phosphorus is seen mainly in premature babies, people with alcohol use disorder, people being fed again after starvation, and long-term users of aluminum antacids.

Less than its reputation suggests. Cola contains phosphoric acid, but in the Caltide food library it has 9.4 mg per 100 g, so a can gives less than a tablespoon of chia seeds.

Phosphate salts added to processed meats, cheese, baked goods and drinks to keep moisture, raise dough or adjust acidity. They are absorbed more readily than the phosphorus that occurs naturally in food.

People with chronic kidney disease. Their kidneys cannot remove the excess, and high blood phosphorus is linked to calcium deposits in blood vessels and heart disease. Their care team sets the limit.

Yes. The US upper limit is 4,000 mg a day for adults up to 70 and 3,000 mg after that. Ordinary diets stay well below it.
