Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is the B vitamin more than 100 enzymes need, most of them in protein metabolism, including making brain messengers. Adults need 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day, from poultry, fish, potatoes, chickpeas and nuts.

What Is Vitamin B6?
Vitamin B6 is a group of six related, water-soluble compounds: pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine, and a phosphate form of each. Pyridoxine is the one in most supplements and the one in the name. The body turns all of them into pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), the form enzymes use.
What Vitamin B6 Does
PLP helps more than 100 enzymes, most of them breaking down, building or reshaping amino acids from protein. That is also how the brain gets its messengers: serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and GABA are all made from amino acids by B6-dependent enzymes. B6 is needed to build hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells, and to turn the amino acid tryptophan into niacin.
With folate and vitamin B12, it also clears homocysteine, an amino acid that builds up in the blood when any of the three runs short. Trials that gave the three vitamins together lowered homocysteine, but did not reduce heart attacks or strokes.
Vitamin B6 in Garlic, Chicken, and Potatoes
Per 100 g, garlic has 1.235 mg of vitamin B6 in the Caltide food library, more than chicken. But a clove weighs about 3 g and gives about 0.04 mg, around 3% of what an adult needs a day. A 135 g portion of grilled chicken breast (0.855 mg per 100 g) gives about 1.15 mg, most of the 1.3 mg adults under 50 need, and a 28 g handful of pistachios about 0.48 mg.
Starchy plants count more than they look. A boiled potato has 0.3 mg per 100 g, so a 200 g potato gives about 0.6 mg, and a banana (120 g) about 0.25 mg. In the United States, fortified cereals, beef, poultry, starchy vegetables and some fruit supply most of the B6 people eat.
Who Is Most Likely to Be Low in Vitamin B6
Deficiency from diet alone is uncommon, and it usually comes with low folate and B12. The groups most at risk are people with kidney disease, including those on dialysis, people with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, and people with alcohol use disorder. Signs include a type of anemia with small red blood cells, a scaly rash, cracks at the corners of the mouth, a swollen tongue, depression and confusion.
Too Much Vitamin B6 From Supplements
Vitamin B6 is one of the few B vitamins where too much does real harm. Months of high doses from supplements can damage the sensory nerves, starting with numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. In 2023 EFSA lowered its adult upper limit from 25 mg to 12 mg a day. Because B6 is in multivitamins, B-complex products and many combination supplements, amounts from two or three products can add up past that limit without any one label looking high.
How Much Vitamin B6 You Need
By age and sex. The need rises after 50, more for men than for women.

| 51+ years | 1.7mg | 1.5mg |

| Breastfeeding | - | 2.0mg |
Vitamin B6 Supplements
Supplements are a common source: B6 is in most multivitamins and B-complex products and is sold on its own.
Vitamin B6 Forms on Supplement Labels
- Pyridoxine hydrochloridethe usual form; well absorbed and converted to PLP in the body
- Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (P-5-P)the active form itself; it counts toward the same upper limit
Medicines That Interact With Vitamin B6
- Some epilepsy drugsvalproic acid, carbamazepine and phenytoin can lower B6 levels
- Cycloserine and theophyllinea tuberculosis drug and an asthma drug that can also lower B6 levels
Ask a doctor or pharmacist before combining a supplement with a medicine.
Vitamin B6 in Caltide
- Logged automaticallyCaltide adds up the vitamin B6 in every food you log and shows it against the amount for your age and sex in the Nutrition tab.
- Supplements count tooAdd each supplement that contains B6 once, with its amount per tablet. Each day you tick them off, they count toward your total, which is the easiest way to see how close several products bring you to 12 mg.

Questions About Vitamin B6
Adults need 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day: the US RDA is 1.3 mg up to age 50, then 1.7 mg for men and 1.5 mg for women; 1.9 mg in pregnancy and 2.0 mg while breastfeeding. EU food labels use 1.4 mg as their reference.
In the Caltide food library, pistachios: 1.7 mg per 100 g. Garlic (1.2 mg) and Lamb liver (0.9 mg) come next. Fortified breakfast cereals are left out of the ranking.
Yes. Taking high doses from supplements for months can damage sensory nerves, causing numbness, tingling or pain in the hands and feet and unsteady walking. It usually improves after stopping. Food alone has not been shown to cause it.
EFSA set the adult upper limit at 12 mg a day in 2023, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The US limit is 100 mg a day. In practice only supplements reach either.
Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP, sold as P-5-P), the active form of vitamin B6 in the body. Some supplements use it instead of pyridoxine hydrochloride; the body makes PLP from either.
It can ease nausea and vomiting in pregnancy for some women. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists vitamin B6, alone or with the antihistamine doxylamine, as a first treatment. Ask a doctor before taking it.
Some epilepsy drugs, such as valproic acid, carbamazepine and phenytoin, the tuberculosis drug cycloserine and the asthma drug theophylline can lower B6 levels. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before combining them with a supplement.
