Mushrooms: food, supplements, and what the evidence shows
These mushrooms are fungi eaten as food, like shiitake, or taken as powders and extracts, like reishi and lion's mane. Most of the research is in cells and animals, with only a few small human trials.

Questions About Mushrooms
The evidence is mostly from cells and animals, with a few small human trials. One exception is PSK, an extract of turkey tail that has been used in Japan alongside standard cancer treatment and studied in clinical trials there.
Shiitake and lion's mane are cooked as food. Reishi, chaga, and turkey tail are woody or leathery, so people take them as teas, powders, and extracts. Cordyceps is sold mostly as supplements grown in labs.
The fruiting body is the mushroom you see; mycelium is the root-like network, often grown on grain. Mycelium powders can contain much of that grain, so the two can differ a lot in what they contain.
Most were well tolerated in short studies, but there are case reports of harm: liver injury linked to reishi powder, kidney damage from heavy use of chaga (which is high in oxalate), and a skin rash from raw or undercooked shiitake.
Some do. Mushrooms exposed to ultraviolet light make vitamin D2, and the NIH lists UV-treated mushrooms among the few plant sources of vitamin D. Ordinary shiitake also supply B vitamins and copper.
Not in the US. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before sale, so the type and amount of mushroom in a product can differ from the label.
Not yet. Caltide does not total mushroom compounds; shiitake you log as food counts toward your calories and nutrients like any other food.
